Vibe is Back in Business
In June, the news came that Vibe was going out of business. The recession hit the hip-hop and R&B media company which led to their closure. It was rumored later the Quincy was to buy back the magazine company, but evidently, that was not true. Now, there is light back in the world of Vibe!
In 1993, producer Quincy Jones founded the music entertainment magazine. It had prominent success because it covered a broader range of interest than its competitor magazine publications. In 2007, Vibe had a circulation of approximately 800,000. With advertisers, from the fashion, music, and automotive industry. But, with the decline of the economy, advertisers were forced to pull their support and subsequently the magazine had to close.
But, new life has been breathed back into Vibe. Vibe and its web site, Vibe.com, have been purchased by a group led by InterMedia Partners, a private equity fund. The website, Vibe.com, will relaunch immediately being the focal point of the Vibe Media company. The print publication will resume in 2010, only being published quarterly.
The magazine will be ran by InterMedia Partners’ Uptown Media, which is the only luxury lifestyle company that targets what it calls the “Affluent African American Market”. David Koff, senior partner at InterMedia Partners had this to say:
“Vibe is the preeminent brand in R&B and hip hop. We feel privileged to purchase and resurrect such a storied brand. Together with the re-launch of Soul Train this fall and the rapid expansion of Uptown Magazine, a reinvigorated Vibe enables us to serve a broad spectrum of the African-American audience with high quality entertainment and information.”
We welcome the relaunch Vibe and Vibe.com. We only hope that the new owner continue the magazine in the spirit in which it was founded. Congratulations!!
