V.J. And Mary Mary Put The “G” In Gospel

New Years Eve Jacksonville Florida: You can hear the rumbling through out the crowd as the base drops. The sight is quite amazing as towels are spinning over people’s heads like ceilng fan blades as far as the eye can see. An energy can be felt throughout the crowd so strong that you just know that something amazing is about to happen. No, i was not at Summer Jam, Spring Bling, or any concert for that matter. This was actually at a Philippian Community Church service and the first time that I heard V.J. The Messenger’s hit song Shundo.

Gospel Music has come a long ways from “This Little Light of Mine”, and artists like V.J. The Messenger and Mary Mary have taken the message of God’s goodness and mixed it with hip hop music to reach an audience who can recite a Jeezy verse line for line but couldn’t tell you three books in the Old Testement. Mary Mary stepped outside of themselves and put a little “T-Pain” on the track to get their single “The God In Me” played all over secular radio and even in the clubs. In fact, in the same city of Jacksonville, “The God In Me” is the #1 song on 93.3 the beat, the top rated hip hop station in the city.

With all of the negativity in the world today, it’s really good to see that not only do we have music with a message about God, it is something that you can vibe to, dance to, and not just listen to on Sunday morning. More Gospel artists need to take a page out of V.J. the Messenger, and Mary Mary’s book. Not only can you spread the Gospel, but you can do it to a fresh beat, hard base lines, and catchy hooks.

I live in Jacksonville, FL and occassionally visit Phillippian Community Church. My boyfriend & I attended one evening last week when they did a concert and we got to hear VJ The Messenger’s song “Shundo”. The whole church was rockin!
